WEATHER FORECAST
Its very rare for this race we get a downwind but this weekend is looking good for just that. A light to moderate Southerly is forecast for race day which will mean the following:
The first third of the race will be slightly side on and the other two thirds will be directly downwind. For those that know how to surf their craft this will mean a very fast second half.
We expect the area around middle head to Dobroyd Point to be pretty bouncy so be prepared for that. Remember you must be able to remount your ski in all conditions to enter this race. Our safety craft will focus on paddlers that are in distress and are not there to nurse one person through the race.
THE COURSE
Competitors will paddle to a turning marker near Taronga Zoo the directly to Bradleys Head.
After rounding Bradleys Head competitors must keep well clear of the channel to Middle Head. This means keeping all Green Channel markers in this area on your right-hand side.
From Middle Head you take a course towards Dobyod and must keep the Black and yellow buoy located east off Dobroyd Head on your right-hand side (pass on the left of it).
Please follow the direction of safety and official boats at all times.
Important – OC1 and OC2 paddlers
For OC1 and OC2 paddlers it may be worth having a handler at the race finish to assist getting your craft up the beach. Our handlers will be moving craft quickly and given the difficulty in handling these craft, we would not want to risk damage.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
- Lifejacket – All competitors must wear an approved minimum Level 50 Lifejacket. Your lifejacket must be HI-VIS or brightly coloured for visibility. No black or dull colour lifejackets will be permitted. An approved Level 50S Lifejacket can only be worn with a Hi-Vis shirt over the top. (Prone Paddleboard competitors only are permitted to wear an approved Level 100/150 Inflatable bum bag Lifejacket)
- Safety Leash – These are required by competitors to maintain contact with their craft, which can be particularly difficult during high winds, or if someone should fall from their craft. (Coastal rowers and sea kayaks are exempt).
- Electronic Timing Chip – Provided at registration
- Mobile Phone highly recommended – In case you pull out and need to call the race officials to be withdrawn from the event (call the event number 0422 554 965)
PULL OUTS – You must text 0422 554 965 if you pull out.
If you pull out of the event after the start or are withdrawn from the event you will be asked to paddle to the nearest safe exit point. We will take your race number (timing number) and relay it back to the finish. You are also advised to call us to let us know you have withdrawn from the race.
If you register and collect your timing chip on Saturday then decide not to race you must send a text to the event number 0422 554 965.
If you pull out before the finish you must also text 0422 554 965.
We strongly suggest you take with you a mobile phone with our numbers so you can call us if you pull out and call someone to pick you up.
